Your Lachlan RLF

Leanne Leihn has been the Lachlan Regional Landcare Facilitator in the Lachlan for the last five years. The Lachlan Regional Landcare Facilitator  position is currently hosted in partnership with LachLandcare and the Central Tablelands Local Land Services, and managed through the RLF Steering Committee.

The RLF works with Landcare, Environment and Producer groups across the Lachlan region to support and assist them identify and achieve their goals. Leanne is working collaboratively with the Central West RLF and the Greater Sydney RLF to support the Central Tablelands groups in the transition period to the new Local Land Services regions.

The terminal system that makes up the Lachlan is unique in the Murray-Darling Basin and features wetlands of national significance including Lake Cowal, the Booligal wetlands and the Great Cumbung Swamp.

Key Issues in the Region:

  • Dryland salinity;
  • Declining surface water quality;
  • Declining health and abundance of native vegetation, impacting on the loss of biodiversity;
  • Degradation of riparian and wetland ecosystems;
  • Deterioration of soils (minerals and biology).

Highlights for the RLF role to date:

  • Supporting LachLandcare to strengthen regional partnerships through developing collaborative opportunities to improve the sustainability, productivity and profitability of the region.
  • Supporting the Landcare networks to develop sub catchment strategic plans to address the needs of their local communities.
  • Collaborating with regional NRM bodies to develop and implement Catchment Action Plans in consultation with the Lachlan community.
  • Providing training opportunities to building capacity and resilience in the Lachlan communities.
  • Supporting the Lachlan networks build new regional partnerships in the transition to the new Local Land Services model.
